Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a hands-on form of healthcare focused on diagnosing, treating and helping prevent pain and problems involving the muscles, joints, spine and surrounding tissues.

At Total Balance Osteopathy in Worthing, osteopathic treatment is tailored to the individual and designed to support movement, comfort and long-term musculoskeletal health.

Osteopaths commonly work with people experiencing a range of musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder tension, joint discomfort, sports injuries and postural problems. Treatment aims to improve mobility, ease tension and help you return to daily activities more comfortably, and in some cases, may help reduce the likelihood of symptoms returning.

Using assessment methods similar to those used in conventional healthcare, osteopaths look at how the body functions as a whole rather than focusing solely on the area causing pain. Your osteopath in Worthing will consider factors such as lifestyle, work, stress, activity levels and medical history to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to your symptoms.

At Total Balance Osteopathy, we believe effective treatment starts with understanding the individual. Every appointment is tailored to your needs, whether you are recovering from injury, managing ongoing discomfort or looking to improve your mobility and overall wellbeing.

Initial appointments at 50-60min duration and Follow up appointments are 30min duration. Extended appointments up to 1 hour are available for follow up appointments.

Initial Appointment (50–60 minutes) – £65
Includes a detailed case history, assessment and treatment.

Follow-Up Appointment (30 minutes) – £50
Continued assessment and treatment as required.

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle and subtle form of osteopathic treatment that uses light touch to assess and address areas of tension and restriction within the body. Rather than using forceful manipulation or "cracking" techniques, treatment works with calm, precise hands-on methods, making it a popular choice for those who prefer a softer approach to care.

Although cranial osteopathy is commonly associated with babies, infants and young children, it may be suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant women, older adults and those experiencing stress-related tension, postural strain or general musculoskeletal discomfort.

During treatment, the osteopath uses highly developed touch to assess subtle patterns of movement and tension throughout the body. Depending on the individual and their symptoms, this may involve working with the head, spine, pelvis and surrounding muscles and connective tissues.

Many patients find cranial osteopathy deeply relaxing. As with all osteopathic treatment at Total Balance Osteopathy, care is tailored to the individual following a full case history and assessment.

If you are based in Worthing or the surrounding area and would like to find out whether cranial osteopathy may be suitable for you, your baby or your child, please feel free to get in touch. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Initial Appointment (50–60 minutes) – £65

Cranial Osteopathy

Pregnancy brings about significant physical and hormonal changes as your body adapts to support your growing baby. As these changes occur, it is common to experience increased strain on the muscles, joints and ligaments, particularly around the lower back, pelvis, hips and rib cage.

Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy is adapted to suit each stage and is always tailored to your individual needs. Treatment uses gentle, hands-on techniques alongside advice on posture, movement and self-management to help you stay as comfortable and active as possible throughout your pregnancy.

Whether you are experiencing pregnancy-related aches and pains, changes in posture, or would simply like support in maintaining comfort and mobility throughout pregnancy, osteopathy can play a supportive role in helping you feel more comfortable and at ease.

Support does not end after birth, postnatal osteopathy is also available at Total Balance Osteopathy to help support your body’s recovery and adaptation during the early months of parenthood.

Pregnancy osteopathy appointments are available at our Worthing clinic throughout all stages of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Osteopathy

Baby Osteopathy
(Birth to 23 months)

The first few months of life involve a huge amount of growth, change and development. Osteopathic treatment for babies uses a very gentle, carefully adapted approach designed to support comfort and encourage healthy movement and development.

Parents may choose to bring their baby for an osteopathic assessment following pregnancy, labour and birth, or simply because they would like their baby to be checked by a registered osteopath.

Common reasons parents seek an assessment include a baby who seems unsettled or uncomfortable, difficulties with feeding, a preference for turning the head to one side, or concerns about sleep and general comfort. Treatment is always led by your baby’s comfort and response.

At Total Balance Osteopathy in Worthing, every appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your baby’s pregnancy, birth and medical history, followed by an assessment and gentle treatment where appropriate. Parents are welcome to feed, change or comfort their baby at any time during the appointment.

When to Seek Medical Advice First

If your baby has a fever, is not feeding, has lost weight, is showing signs of acute illness, or you have any urgent concerns about their health, please contact your GP, midwife or call 111 before booking an osteopathic appointment. Osteopathy is not a replacement for medical care, and we will always advise referral where appropriate.

Initial Appointment (50–60 minutes) – £65
Includes a detailed case history, assessment and treatment.

Follow-Up Appointment (30 minutes) – £45
Continued assessment and treatment as required.

Children's Osteopathy
(24 months to 16 years)

As children grow, their bodies are constantly adapting to the demands of school, sport, hobbies and everyday life. Osteopathic care is tailored to each child’s age, stage of development and individual needs.

Common reasons parents seek an assessment for their child include back or neck pain, growing pains, postural concerns, discomfort related to heavy school bags or increased screen time, and sports-related aches and strains. For teenagers, osteopathy can also provide support during periods of rapid growth, changes in posture, and the physical demands of more competitive sport or intensive study.

Appointments are designed to be relaxed, friendly and age-appropriate, helping children feel comfortable and at ease throughout their visit. For older children and teenagers, treatment is always explained clearly and carried out with the agreement of both parent and child in an age-appropriate way. A parent or guardian must be present during all appointments for patients under 16 years of age.

The first appointment includes a detailed case history, assessment and treatment where appropriate. Follow-up appointments allow ongoing care and support based on your child’s individual needs.

When to Seek Medical Advice First

If your child is experiencing severe or worsening pain, unexplained weight loss, fever alongside musculoskeletal symptoms, or you have any urgent concerns about their health, please contact your GP or call 111 before booking an osteopathic appointment.

Osteopathy is not a replacement for medical care, and we will always advise referral where appropriate.

Initial Appointment (50–60 minutes) – £65
Includes a detailed case history, assessment and treatment.

Follow-Up Appointment (30 minutes) – £50
Continued assessment and treatment as required.

Mother & Baby Osteopathy

Welcoming a new baby brings many physical and emotional changes.

Our combined Mother & Baby appointments allow both mother and baby to be assessed and treated during the same visit, making care more convenient for busy families. These appointments are available from the early postnatal period onwards.

Common reasons mothers seek an assessment include lower back or pelvic pain following birth, recovery after a caesarean section, neck and shoulder tension from feeding and carrying, and pelvic floor-related discomfort.

By seeing both mother and baby together, we can gain a broader understanding of the physical demands that pregnancy, birth and early parenthood can place on the body, with treatment tailored to each individual.

These appointments provide dedicated time to discuss any concerns relating to both mother and baby.

Treatment for your baby is always led by their comfort and response, and you are welcome to feed, change or comfort your baby at any time during the appointment.

When to Seek Medical Advice First

If you are experiencing severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, signs of infection, or have any urgent concerns about your own health or your baby's health following birth, please contact your GP, midwife or call 111 before booking an osteopathic appointment. Osteopathy is not a replacement for medical care, and we will always advise referral where appropriate.
